Buffer weight is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to tune how an AR-15 shoots. The buffer is the moving mass that rides behind the bolt carrier in the receiver extension, and changing its weight changes the entire rhythm of the action.

Factory buffers come in a few standard weights. A carbine buffer is the lightest, followed by the H (heavy), H2, and H3 buffers, which add tungsten or steel weights inside the buffer body to increase mass. Heavier is not automatically better. The goal is to match reciprocating mass to your gas system and load.
